Anatomy of the Skin

Most of us have little knowledge of the anatomy of the skin. It's just there. We are born with it and few of us give much thought about skin anatomy.

However, if we want to have healthy, beautiful skin it is important for us to learn how our skin is constructed. Beauty of our skin is determined by the structure and proper functions of the various components that are found in the skin.

Our skin is made up of different layers: the hypodermis, dermis and the epidermis. Each of the layers are unique and their various functions contribute to the skin's overall appearance and health.

The skin has six purposes: protection, thermoregulation, excretion, secretion, sensation and vitamin synthesis.

There are skin components common to more than one layer. For instance: pores, hairs, sebaceous glands and sweat glands are common to the dermis and epidermis layers of the skin.

The more we learn about the anatomy of our skin, the better we will be able to care for it and nourish it. This not only makes it easier for us to slow the aging process but we will be able to keep our skin healthy and beautiful.
