Basal Cell Carcinoma

Basal cell carcinoma, also called BCC, is the most common type of skin cancer.

Basal cell cancer seldom kills but it is still considered malignant because it can cause significant destruction and disfigurement by invading surrounding tissues. In other words, if you develop basal cell cancer you could be left with a scar.

Early Diagnosis Important

  • Basal cell cancers are easily treated if diagnosed early. More extensive treatment is needed if the tumor has grown
  • It is necessary to realize that some forms of basal cell cancer are more aggressive than other forms of BCC. Treatments for re-occurrence
Frequent visits to the dermatologist is suggested because once a person has had one basal cell cancer they are at risk for developing others. The area where the first skin was treated as well as the whole skin surface will be examined.
    • When this form of skin cancer develops on the scalp and nose it usually returns within the first two years after surgery.
    • If the cancer should return such methods as Mohs micrographic surgery may be used.
It cannot be stressed enough...If you see any of the warning signs of basal cell carcinoma on yourself or any other member of your family see your doctor immediately!
