Melanoma - The Four Types

I came across this news item and thought I would pass it on.

It is about a study done the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine led by Sasha Hu, MD.

This study examined 42,072 cases of melanoma occurring between l990 and 2004.

This study showed that whites were more likely to be diagnosed with melanoma than blacks or Hispanics. However, when blacks were diagnosed the cancer was in a more advanced state.

Statistics showed that eighteen percent of Hispanics and twenty-six per cent of blacks were diagnosed with the most advanced cases. This compared with twelve percent among whites.

This study shows that no one is immune to melanoma and how important it is that we make sure every member of our family protected against skin cancer.

When Is a Tan Not Healthy

When Is a Tan Not Healthy

Sometimes we think that if we avoid the sun and get our tans by going to a tanning salon we can avoid the dangers of melanoma. Unfortunately, this is not the case.

This form of cancer is on the rise, especially among young adults and adolescents.

Dr. Keeter Sechrist, a dermatologist reported that the biggest increase in melanoma is in young women, ages 20 to 30. The cause may be related to the behavior of going to tanning facilities.

Melanoma is a form of skin cancer that occurs in melanocytes, the cells that determine pigmentation.

Although the primary site of melanocytes is in the skin, they are also found in other parts of the body such as the eyes. Melanoma can develop wherever melanocytes are found.

When people are exposed to ultraviolet radiation, melanocytes can grow atypically and become cancerous.

The two main sources of ultraviolet exposure are tanning beds and the sun. Overexposure is detrimental to all people, even those with naturally dark skin.

Bald Spots and Sun Damage

Most of us don't think about SPF when it comes to our head. Anyone who has thinning hair or bald spots should seriously consider the risks of sun exposure to the scalp.

These areas increase your exposure to damaging ultraviolet rays, which can cause premature aging of the skin and increase your risk of skin cancer.

Check for a sunscreen with a SPF rating of between 15 and 30.
