What's the Cause of Acne?

. What's the cause of acne? A question asked by anyone who suddenly has an outbreak of pimples. Why me!

There are many different things that can cause us to suffer from acne.

Some of these are:

Family/Genetic History

  • If someone in your family as suffered from acne it is more likely you will also develop it and at an early age.
  • It may also determine how much scarring occurs.
Hormonal Activity
  • such as menstrual cycles and puberty. During the teen years the body increases the produces of male sex hormones called androgens. (This happens in both boys and girls.)
  • The increase of hormones cause the follicular glands to get larger and make more sebum.
Inflammation
  • caused by a skin irritation or by scratching.
Stress
  • causes outbreaks of acne by increasing the output of hormones from the adrenal (stress) glands.

Accumulation of dead skin cells that block or cover pores.

Bacteria in the pores.

Use of anabolic steroids

Medication containing lithium, barbiturates or androgens.

Exposure to certain chemical compounds.

  • Chloracne is particularly linked to toxic exposure to dioxins, namely chlorinated dioxins

Exposure to Halogens

  • Halogen acne is linked to exposure to halogens (e.g. iodides, chlorides, bromides, fluorides)
Chronic use of amphetamines or other similar drugs.

Diet

  • Many of the long held beliefs that bad eating habits were the main cause of acne are now being challenge. However, some feel that avoiding certain foods can improve acne outbreaks.
As seen, some of the factors and causes of acne are beyond our control but some are not. How severe our acne outbreaks are has much to to do with the choices we make.
