Possible Cure for Cancer
Is there a cure for cancer? For years, doctors have been doing research to find a vaccine would cure cancer. Now they may have found one. They have developed a vaccine that targets skin cancer cells. I came across this news item that I thought might be of interest to those who are suffering from
melanoma.
In a cancer research study done by Dr. Douglas Schwartzentruber of Indiana University, it was found that twice as many people who were given this vaccine had their tumors shrink compared to those who didn't get the drug. It didn't prove to be a cure for cancer but it did show promise. Dr. Schwartzentrubers is quoted as saying that the study shows this vaccine to be "one of the first to show positive, promising results for a cancer vaccine".
A Picture of Melanoma This vaccine is made up of a molecule that is found on the surface of melanoma cells. The idea is to get the body to destroy this molecule and attack the cancer cells at the same time.
Dr. Schwartzentrubers summed it up when he said, “These results will give patients and the oncology community hope that we are making some progress against this disease.” Does that mean there is now a cure for skin cancer? No, this vaccine is just a small step in the long march toward finding a cancer cure.
