Here is a list of famous people from past and present who developed skin cancer, some survived but sadly some did not. George Washington - Former President of the United States - developed a
pre-cancerous lesions
on his face. He is quoted as saying: "...an irritable spot on my right cheek which had for years been increasing in pricking and disagreeable sensations; and in June last assumed the decided character of a Cancer." (Feb. 25, 1795)
Franklin Delano Roosevelt - Former President of the United States - Thought to have malignant melanoma while in the White House. This was not confirmed. Dwight Eisenhower - Former President of the United States - survived malignant melanoma Ronald Reagan – Former President of the United States – survived the removal of
basal cell carcinoma
from his nose while in office. Six months later it came back and was again successfully treated.
Bill Clinton - Former President of the United States - survivor treated for basal cell skin cancer on his back George H. Bush – Former President of the United States - survived
pre-cancerous skin
on the face President George W. Bush – Former President of the United States – survived - had pre-cancerous lesions removed. John McCain – US Senator and Presidential Candidate – survived three battles with skin cancer. One involved the removal of a
mole
and the other was malignant
melanoma
from his arm and at a later date had another melanoma removed from his face.
John Ashcroft - American Politician – survived after having pre-cancerous lesions removed.
Maureen Reagan – Daughter of President Ronald Reagan – died at 60 years of age from cancer after successful treatment for skin cancer. She died when tumors developed in her brain.
Johnny Carson - Talk Show Host – survivor developed basal cell carcinoma. Bob Marley – Entertainer - died at 36 years old from a combination of melanoma and brain cancer.
Michael Jackson diagnosed with skin cancer after cancerous skin cells were found on his nose, chest and arm. He has had areas his chest, arm and nose shaved to remove potentially lethal growths. Sadly, Michael died, but not from skin cancer.
Burgess Meredith - Actor – died from a combination of melanoma and alzheimer. Mr. T. - Actor – survived - battle with exceedingly rare form of skin cancer known as mycosis fungoides (MF). Roger Moore – Actor – survived basal cell carcinoma.
John Milford - Actor, helped create the Hollywood Walk of Fame - died of melanoma. Frank Dicopoulos - Soap star on the series Guiding Light – survived basal cell carcinoma.
Cybill Shepherd - Actress – survived after being treated for skin cancer.
Elizabeth Taylor – Actress – survived basal cell skin cancer.
Fitz Dixon Jr. - Owner of Philadelphia 76ers – died.
Troy Aikman - Football Player for Dallas Cowboys - survived melanoma.
Jeff Torborg - Marlin's baseball manager – survived skin cancer surgery.
Stuart Entwistle – Surfer – died from skin cancer
Princess Michael of Kent - British Royalty – survivor under went surgery for skin cancer.
Diana Ashby - wife of NASA astronaut Jeff Ashby - died at the age of 34 from melanoma.
Anderson Cooper – CNN Anchor Journalist – survivor of skin cancer.
Sam Donaldson- TV Journalist – survivor of skin cancer.
This is only some of the famous people with skin cancer. Malignant melanoma is the most serious form of this disease, however, all forms of skin cancer are dangerous. Even if they are not the type of cancer that can kill there is the possibility of disfigurement and there is also the danger that the cancer will spread and reappear in other parts of the body.
