History of Tattoos

The history of tattoos is a fascinating account of how people through the ages have sought to enhance their skin's beauty. Tattoo history also includes the many other uses of tattoos.

Some say we get the word 'tattoo' from two Polynesian words: 'ta' meaning to strike something, and 'tau' meaning to mark something. If that is so, it is quite an apt description considering the method of applying a tattoo.

The story of tattoos starts more than 5000 years ago and weaves it way through almost all cultures. As the practice of tattooing spread through these cultures the designs and reasons for tattoos changed.

History of Tattoos - Moari Chief Tattoo history seems to begin in the bronze age. In 1991, the body of 'Otzi the Iceman' was uncovered in the Otz valley in the Alps. By using carbon testing it was discovered his body had 57 carbon tattoos on it. It is thought that these tattoos were applied for medical reasons possibly for treating arthritis.

In 1948 mummies found in southern Siberia dating back approximately 2400 years. The tattoos on these bodies represent a wide variety of animals, the griffins and monsters. Some of these tattoos were thought to have a magical significance but others were thought to be decorative. These tattoos seem to indicate the status of the individual wearing them.

The history of tattoos show that while the art of tattooing may have changed the reasons for doing it has changed little.
