Prevent Skin Cancer Use A Sunscreen
We can prevent skin cancer by knowing which sunscreen products protects our skin best from damaging UV rays. What does SPF in a sunscreen mean? What does PA in a sunscreen mean? Should we look for a UV sunscreen with a PA grade? How important is it that we use a sunscreen?
The importance of sunscreens in preventing skin cancer is: - Skin cancer is the most deadly result of exposure to UV rays.
- When UVA and UVB rays interact with the skin, cells mutate and form tumors.
How Sunscreens WorkSunscreens that physically deflect UV rays away from the skin usually contain zinc oxide or titanium oxide particles that deflect UV rays. People with sensitive skin find this type of sunscreen less irritating. Organic sunscreens contain such chemicals as benzophenones or cinnamates. These chemicals contain molecules that absorb UV rays and then converts the energy to heat. This process protects the cells in the skin.
Sun Protection Factor (SPF) Helps Prevent Skin CancerWhat does a UV sunscreen of SPF 15 mean? Here is how it works. If you normally get sunburned while staying out in the sun for 10 minutes, a UV sunscreen of SPF 15 would allow you to stay out in the sun 15 times longer. That means you could be in the sun for 150 minutes without getting a sunburn. Most UV sunscreens are SPF 15, SPF 30, or SPF 30+. Does that mean that a sunscreen of SPF 30 or SPF 30+ is twice as good as SPF 15? Not Necessarily. The problem is that when someone is wearing an SPF 30 or SPF 30+ they could erroneously think they can stay out in the sun longer.
Prevent Skin Cancer by Using UVA Ray ProtectionSunscreens give UVB rays protection but UVA rays also cause skin damage. Scientist doing research into skin care are now better understanding the dangers of UVA rays, a new abbreviated term PA often appears on sunscreen labels telling how much the product protects against UVA rays. What does PA stand for? PA stands for Protection grade of UVA. - PA+ protects sensitive skin against low to medium UV radiation
- PA++ offers better protection from UVA rays and can be used by people with normal skin exposed to medium UV radiation
- PA+++ is the strongest grade of UVA protection now available. It is designed for normal skin under very strong or direct UV radiation.
Scientist are always trying to find the causes of skin cancer and alerting us to new dangers. We can help prevent skin cancer by knowing which UV sunscreen products can protect our skin from damage caused by UV rays.
