Rosacea
Symptoms of This Skin Disorder

Rosacea symptoms appear gradually on the face. In fact, some who have this disease do not even know they are suffering from it. It affects men and women alike although more often it is found in women.

It is more common in fair haired people, at one time it was apparently been nicknamed the 'curse of the Celts' by some in Britain and Ireland, but can also affect people of other ethnic background.

President Clinton suffers from this skin disorder as did Diana, Princess of Wales.

Symptoms

It begins with flushing and redness on the central face and across the cheeks, nose or forehead but can also affect the neck, chest, ears, and scalp.

As this condition progresses, other symptoms can develop such as:

Dilation of superficial blood vessels

When this occurs on the face it cause redness that looks like a sunburn or blush. This may become more pronounced as the condition progresses.
Dry Skin
Pimples often occur as this disorder progresses. These are different from the pimples of acne which appear as blackheads and whiteheads. The pimples associated with this skin disorder appear as small, red bumps.
Red Lines
Some people notice red lines appear when they flush. This happens because small blood vessels become enlarged and show through the skin.
Treatment

If this condition is not treated nasal bumps may appear. You see this condition more in men. They get often small bumps on their nose.

Treating this skin disorder varies from patient to patient depending on severity. It can't be cured but it can be controlled through various methods, both traditional and non-traditional ways.

It is suggested that a diary be kept to help identify and reduce triggers that may make this worse.

It is important to have a gentle skin cleansing regimen using non-irritating cleansers.

Protection from the sun is important and daily use of a sunscreen of at least SPF 15 containing a physical blocker such as zinc oxide or titanium dioxide is advised.

Laser Treatments

Dermatological vascular laser treatments (single wavelength) or Intense Pulsed Light (broad spectrum) machines offer one of the best treatments for this condition. With a sufficient number of treatments, this method may even eliminate the redness altogether, though additional periodic treatments may be needed to remove newly-formed capillaries.

CO2 lasers can be used to remove excess tissue caused by phymatous rosacea. CO2 lasers emit a wavelength that is absorbed directly by the skin. Photorejuvenation can also be used to improve the appearance this skin disorder and reduce the redness associated with it.

Treatment is long term, usually 1-2 years before the disorder is under control. Lifelong treatment is often necessary, although some cases of rosacea symptoms resolve themselves after a while and go into a permanent remission.
