Prevent Skin Aging Four Things to Avoid
We all age. That is a given. So the question arises: How can we protect our skin from premature aging? Thankfully, there are some very easy steps we can take to avoid skin damage. Here are four enemies of our skin. By avoiding them we can help keep our skin looking vibrant and healthy.
The Sun The sun is the skin's number one enemy so it stands to reason that getting too much sun would speed up the aging process. Smoking The effects of smoking on the skin occurs in several ways.- It causes the tiny blood vessels in our body to become thinner. As the blood vessels carrying oxygen and nutrients to the skin become thinner damage is done to elastic fibers and collagen, making the skin sag.
- It causes wrinkles around the mouth area. This happens when people smoke they purse their lips together to hold the cigarette making fine lines around the mouth to appear.
- Wrinkles are caused when smokers squint their eyes because of the smoke getting into their eyes.
- Dr. Lawrence Gibson’s article on the Mayo Clinic website discusses how deep wrinkles can appear on the skin after only ten years of smoking and the effects are irreversible.
Bad Eating Habits and Poor Diet- Our skin will look dull and under-nourished if we have a poor diet consisting mostly of junk foods. Junk foods contain very little antioxidants which fight free radicals
- Free radicals are molecules which cause skin damage when they accelerate the damage to our body's tissue, cells and DNA. A healthy well balanced diet can help fight off free radicals.
- Drink enough water, at least eight glasses a day. Dehydrated skin becomes dry and flaky increasing premature skin aging.
- Drinks such as coffee and sodas containing caffeine are best avoided. Caffeine is a diuretic which increases the release of fluids faster.
Avoid Stress Stress can have a negative affect on our body in many ways.- When we are under stress, a stress hormone is released. Constant stress will make our hormone level to rise causing the body to divert energy from the digestive track and other areas of the body. This leads to yellow, sagging skin.
- Stress can also be a factor in adult acne and other skin problems such as eczema and psoriasis.
- When we become stressed we tend to eat more, smoke more and do other things that contribute to our skin aging.
By taking positive steps we can slow the aging process. Thankfully, there are products on the market that ingredients in them that work to slow both the internal process and external process.
