Aging Skin and Skin Health - What is the Relationship

Puritan's Pride Offer Banner Aging skin and poor skin health are problems that face us all as we grow older. Since beauty comes from the inside out as well as outside in, we must maintain good overall health if we are to have vibrant, beautiful skin.

Wrinkles, lines, and sagging skin are just some of the signs of aging skin.

There are two processes at work in the aging process:
intrinsic aging - we have little control over this process
mechanical aging - we have more more control this process

This natural aging process is known as "intrinsic aging," which means the loss of skin thickness and elasticity, the deepening of facial expression lines, and the development of fine wrinkles.

There are many things that can speed this process up. Such things as ultraviolet rays, cigarette smoke (smoking) , repeated facial movements, and unhealthy foods also contribute to our having the signs of skin aging and poor skin health.

Leading skin care expert Dr. Jeannette Graf says, you can take control of how you age.
"Every day, you make decisions that will profoundly affect the future."

Dr. Graf went on to say that our skin needs nutrients, hydration, protection, and good habits to achieve that wrinkle free, radiant look that we all strive for.

The Right Treatment Routine To Maintain Skin Health And Reduce Wrinkles

Although our skin takes a beating from the sun and pollutants, it is the sun that causes the most damage to our skin.

Ultraviolet rays from the sun penetrate the skin and destroys collagen, elasticity, and causes pigmentation, leaving lines, wrinkles, freckles, and sagging skin. Even small amounts of sun exposure can lead to the skin being damaged.

To protect our skin from the environment, we need to look for a good skin treatment regimen that consists of regular exfoliation, hydration, irritation reduction, and antioxidants (Latona, Valerie. "4 Steps to Healthier Skin." Shape, Sept. 2002, p. 56).

---The use of a good sunscreen.

Good moisturizers helps our skin absorb water and provide sunscreen protection.

For acne and blemishes, products containing salicylic or alphalipoic acid can work wonders.

Aloe and chamomile soothe the skin giving it that healthy radiant look.

Antioxidants like those found in vitamin C, vitamin E, green tea, and grape seed extract provide great protection against free radicals.

The Right Habits For Healthy SkinSimple things like.....
  • trying not to squint;
  • don't drink through straws; and
  • keep our hands away from our face.
Actions such as these speed up the aging process and will cause lines and wrinkles.

Be aware of how often you frown or purse your lips. These repeated movements can cause mechanical aging .

By controlling these movements we can slow down the development of lines and wrinkles.

The Right Diet To Maintain Healthy Skin

The right diet includes healthy foods balanced by vitamins and mineral supplementations.

Dr. Nicholas Perricone, author of The Wrinkle Cure, recommends an anti-inflammatory diet that includes vegetables, fruits, and plenty of fish. "By altering the way we eat," he says, "we can control and eliminate inflammation." Inflammation speeds the formation of wrinkles and other signs of aging.

According to nutrition educator Mary Meck Higgins, fish contributes fatty acids that help protect the skin from sun damage ("The Good Skin Diet." Bella, Jan/Feb 2003, p. 14).

Studies show that people who enjoy beautiful skin later in life have often kept to diets high in fish and other anti-inflammatory foods.

Look for nutrients like vitamin A (egg yolks, nonfat milk), beta-carotene (dark-colored produce), B vitamins (poultry, fish), vitamin C (strawberries, cantaloupe), vitamin E (salmon, extra-lean meat), selenium (wheat germ, whole grains), and zinc (seafood, soybeans) in the foods you eat.

We must work to achieve skin health if we want beautiful wrinkle free skin. Skin problems develop for many reasons. We may have control over some while others we have little control over. There is a direct relationship on between skin health and skin aging. We cannot stop the aging process but we can slow it down.
